Introduction

Esthetic Professionals Dental Education Center has created a state of the art "Computer Training Center" to provide an environment where the entire dental team can master the many new digital technologies and software applications necessary to keep up in today’s competitive marketplace. It is no longer a question of whether you should go digital in your office but when do you want to start.

This program was designed to simplify the process of going digital in your practices by providing a didactic and hands on experience that will give attendees the tools and confidence to get started on the following Monday.

The first four sessions teach how to acquire, manage, manipulate and present digital photographic images. Additional sessions will deal with current and developing digital technologies that are used in a broad range of practice and laboratory applications. In addition to providing hands on training, this series will provide the participants enough information to make informed decisions when considering the purchase of other digital software or technologies.

Sessions

Session 1: "Digital Image Acquisition and Handling" (Dr. Jack Ringer)
Friday, January 9th 2009

Digital photography has proven its superiority to conventional film photography due to its accuracy, simplicity, versatility and cost effectiveness and has proven itself to be an essential tool for any contemporary dental practice. For both general and specialist practices, digital images are necessary for optimal practice success and case management.

The goals of this first session will be to discuss the fundamentals of digital cameras and digital photography as it relates to a contemporary dental practice and show how to manage images in a systematic and organized way. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Participants will learn how to select and mange digital cameras, choose the necessary accessories like memory, mirrors and retractors and capture consistent images. Once the images are captures they must be down loaded using card readers into a computer and organized into easy to access files. The entire process should be simple, organized and mastered by practice staff.

Session 2: "Computer Fundamentals Necessary for Images and Data Management" (Dr. Jack Ringer)
Saturday, January 10th 2009

Historically a successful practice required mastering and applying dental techniques and materials. To be successful in today’s competitive marketplace, dentists and the dental teams must also be competent in many computer skills as well. Learning how to manage and access acquired digital images and data is an essential.

The goals of this session is to establish an understanding of the basic computer fundamentals necessary when utilizing the computer to manage and access nay data and digital images located on the computer. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Participants will learn basic computer fundamentals and functions as well as what is necessary in making hardware decisions. In addition, learning how to create organized files is essential for optimal efficiency. Also it is essential to protect computer files and learn how to transmit files to specialists and laboratories via the internet. This session provides the foundation necessary to integrate computer skills to build a successful contemporary practice.

Session 3: "Software Applications for Image Modification and Presentation" (Dr. Jack Ringer)
Friday, February 6th 2009

Once digital images have been successfully captures and categorized, a computer must be used to successfully access, manipulate and present the data to our patients or colleagues. It is necessary to learn software applications to optimize digital images and software application used prepare presentations that will impress the most discriminating observer.

The goal of this session will be to teach participants basic image manipulation and enhance techniques plus simplified presentation software. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in the Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Participants will learn digital modifications such as cropping, sizing, color adjusting, brightness modification, and resolution changing using Photoshop Elements. Preserving original images and modified images will be covered. Finally, the fundamentals of using PowerPoint for creating presentations and how to easily personalize them for each patient will be completed by each participant.

Session 4: "Digital Image Simulation Software Techniques and Images and Web Based Applications" (Dr. Jack Ringer)
Saturday, February 7th 2009

Advances in digital software technology have simplified the process of creating virtually limitless manipulations and simulations to an original captured digital image. The result of these simulations and manipulations can be truly realistic and an extremely valuable diagnostic tool in cosmetic dentistry. Creating a virtual preview for the patient has been shown to optimize treatment acceptance of esthetic procedures. Treatment outcomes are also optimized by using simulations to communicate to specialists and laboratories.

The goal for this program will be to discuss the different options available in creating digital image simulations and manipulations and how to transfer this data utilizing the web. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Participants will learn how to create their own digital manipulations using general manipulation software along with creating digital dental simulation using Alterimage Software which was specifically designed for dental image simulations. Participants will also learn how to create a library of simulations for marketing and other purposes. Utilizing the web to transfer these images for viewing by others would follow this.

Session 5: "Digital Solutions to Everyday Problems" (Dr. Bruce J. Crispin and Guest Presenters)
Friday, March 6th, 2009

Restorative dentistry is change significantly over the last 20 years. The everyday practice of dentistry will also change significantly over the next few years due to the development of digital technologies. Technologies and materials that we have taken for granted for many years are being replaced with new and improving digital technology.

The goal of this session is to present many of the new digital technologies that are changing the every day practice of dentistry. Deciding which new technologies are worth the investment is a difficult and cost to benefit ratios will be discussed. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Impression making with silicone or other materials may be a thing of the past in the near future. Participants will learn how to make a digital impression. Instead of boxing and sending cases to the lab, it is now possible to just email in your impressions. Digital x-rays (imaging) has been around for many years but new technology is easier and can do many things that film and early digital technology cannot.

Advances have been made in caries detection, bone density, implant planning and immediate placement and total 3-D analysis of the jaws and joints. Diagnosis is the key to optimal treatment. Shade selection is no longer a subjective process.

Reproducible shades can be done in minutes with a comprehensive report ready to email to the lab. The lab can do virtual shade matching to minimize shade alteration at delivery. Participants will experience how easy and accurate it is using three different systems.

Session 6: "Advanced Digital Technology used in Implant and Restorative Dentistry" (Dr. Bruce J Crispin and guest presenter)
Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Digital technology is now being used for almost every stage of restorative dentistry. From the panning phase of complex cases through almost every laboratory phase, digital technology is now being used and significantly improving materials, accuracy and consistency. Implant planning and placement is one area that digital technology has made one of its greatest impacts on advanced restorative dentistry. From single units to full mouth reconstructions, implant placement has been simplified the planning, placement and improved outcomes.

In addition to implants, digital technology is impacting almost every area of our practices and the laboratory. Digital anesthesia has gone to the next level of sophistication. It is now possible to fabricate almost anything in the office and in the lab using digital technology. Models, metal and ceramic substructures, implant abutments, full contour crowns, occlusal splints, and more can now be fabricated digitally.

The goal of this session is to present how digital technology is simplifying the planning and treatment of complex restorative cases. Teaching methods will include the use of didactic presentations and demonstrations followed by hands on experience in Esthetic Professionals Computer Training Center.

Participants will learn what is new and how it will impact their practice. They will use digital images and implant planning software to diagnose, plan and even prepare surgical guides. Learn how to take the guess work out of implant success. See and experience how new digital anesthesia can enhance the patient experience and simplify clinical procedures.

Experience the latest "In Office" digital restoration fabrication and is it right restorations that are superior to previous options? Learn how even occlusal splints can be fabricated digitally. In this final session of the series, participants will engage in planning for their dream office and what is right for them. Team buying power can lead to special deals and this will be discussed at this session. Do not buy anything until you complete this series on digital dentistry.
