Dental Equipment Financing Guide
New dental equipment is one of the most valuable investments a practice or lab can make, but the upfront cost can be a real barrier, especially when multiple systems are needed at once. Dental equipment financing exists to close that gap, allowing practices to acquire modern technology right away while spreading the cost over manageable monthly payments. Here’s what to know before you finance your next purchase.
Why Financing Makes Sense
Paying cash upfront for a CBCT scanner, mill, or full digital lab setup ties up capital that could otherwise support staffing, marketing, or day-to-day operations. Financing allows practices to start benefiting from new equipment, faster turnaround, better diagnostics, and improved patient experience immediately, while paying for it gradually as the equipment itself helps generate revenue. For many practices, the monthly savings from reduced outside lab fees or increased case acceptance can offset a meaningful portion of the financing payment from the start.
What Financing Typically Costs
Financing terms vary by equipment type, loan structure, and credit approval, but as a general guide:
- Intraoral scanners and 3D printers can start as low as $200 per month.
- Mills can start as low as $400 per month.
- CBCT systems can start as low as $900 per month.
Some financing plans also offer a payment deferral period of up to six months, giving new or growing practices breathing room before payments begin. Terms can extend up to 60 months, which affects the size of the monthly payment. Longer terms lower the monthly cost but increase total interest paid over the life of the loan.
Keep in mind that advertised monthly pricing is typically an estimate based on approved credit and a specific loan term, and doesn’t include tax or shipping, which vary by location.
Working With Financing Partners
Rather than issuing financing directly, most dental equipment suppliers work with dedicated financing partners who specialize in medical and dental equipment lending. At Esthetic Professionals, we work with two financing partners, Everbank and Prime Health Financial, giving practices more than one path to approval and terms that fit their specific financial situation. Working with an established financing partner (rather than general business credit) often means underwriting that better understands equipment value and practice cash flow.
Don’t Forget Tax Incentives
Financing and tax planning often work together. Under Section 179 of the tax code, practices may be able to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment in the year it’s placed into service, even if that equipment was financed rather than paid for in cash. This means a practice can spread out payments while still capturing a significant deduction in the same tax year, effectively lowering the real first-year cost of the equipment well below the sticker price.
Questions to Ask Before You Finance
- What is the total cost over the life of the loan, not just the monthly payment?
- Is a payment deferral period available, and does it fit your timeline?
- Does the financing partner have experience with dental-specific equipment?
- How does financing this purchase affect your eligibility for Section 179 in the current tax year?
