Periodontal Surgery Bootcamp:
Empowering Clinicians to Advance to the Next Level of Comprehensive Care
Type: Live Surgery I Lecture | Hands On | Remote
Date: TBD
Credits: 48 CE
INTRODUCTION
Improving patient outcomes in the general practice can benefit both patients and the dentist. Clinicians who possess knowledge and skills in more clinical disciplines are able to provide improved care with higher efficiency. In today’s competitive market, clinicians with greater knowledge and skills are able to gain an edge.
Periodontal therapy is an important aspect of comprehensive care, which is often underutilized. In particular, periodontal therapy is often limited to non-surgical care. The primary reason for this underutilization is deficiencies in knowledge and skills to deliver surgical periodontal therapy. This can sometimes leads to sub-optimal results. For example, in sites with deep subgingival caries, it is hard to obtain an accurate impression. Moreover, the restorative margin is placed in violation of the biologic width (supracrestal periodontal attachment), leading to chronic inflammation, pain and marginal bone loss.
General practitioners can be empowered to successfully perform many periodontal procedure. This can improve efficiency of care. At a minimum, clinicians have more in-depth understanding when collaborating with periodontal colleagues.
Goal:
The objective of this periodontal surgical bootcamp is to elevate the practical knowledge and skills of clinicians to improve overall patient care. The goal is not to train general dentists to become periodontists. Upon successful completion of this bootcamp, clinicians should acquire the basic knowledge and skills to provide select periodontal surgical therapies.
Course Director: Dr. Homa Zadeh
Dr. Zadeh is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and Implant Surgery. He has served as tenured associate professor, Director of the post-doctoral periodontology (2012 to 2019), as well as Chair of Periodontology Section (2003-2006) at USC Ostrow School of Dentistry. He completed post-doctoral clinical training in periodontology, as well as a PhD degree in immunology, at the University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC) School of Dental Medicine and School of Medicine, respectively. Dr. Zadeh has lectured nationally and internationally in over 30 countries at prestigious conferences on topics ranging from aesthetics to minimally invasive periodontal and implant surgery, as well as tissue engineering.Dr Zadeh served as president of the Western Society of Periodontology (WSP) in 2017, which is the largest regional periodontology society spanning the 16 western US states and Canadian provinces.
