Traditional Wisdom

Although ceramics have grown in popularity and new systems continue to be developed and introduced, metal remains a popular choice for many clinical scenarios. Paired with a new generation of dental porcelains, noble metal alloys can be used to achieve truly impressive results. Porcelain fused to noble alloys provides outstanding strength and the newer generation of dental porcelains allows. EP Dental Laboratory skilled ceramists to create results that challenge the human eye while simultaneously achieving the most in terms of strength.

Ceramometal types/brands:

a) High noble cast

  • Benchmark C (Jelenko) Used for most ceramometal crowns and bridges.
  • Jelfine 52 (Jelenko) is the original gold-platinum alloy used for ceramometal. Used for crowns and bridges when a more yellow alloy is desired.
  • GoldTech Bio 2000 (Argen) is a 99+% gold alloy used when an extreme yellow color is desired for enhanced esthetic results. Note that because of the soft nature of this alloy a 360 ceramic margin must be used. Indicated for esthetic single units or short anterior bridges.

b) Complex noble alloys

  • Captek is a gold palladium alloy that is bright yellow and may enhance esthetic results. It is very biocompatible and can be used for crowns and bridges.

c) Non-noble alloys

Rexillium V (Pentron) is a nickel chrome alloy that can be used for any ceramometal restoration. Commonly it is used for bonded bridges

ii. Cast Metal Restorations

a) High & non-noble alloys

  • Firmilay (Jelenko) is used for inlays, onlays, crowns, and bridges.
  • Rexillium V is used for cast dowel cores

iii. Composite over metal restorations

a) Non-noble alloys

  • Rexillium V is recommended for all composite over metal restorations like inlay retained bridges and anterior veneer bridges. Indirect composite over Rexilliun V is a good choice for long span bridges or long term temporaries.
